Free Public Access Unix Accounts

Having FREE access to one or more remote Unix systems are useful for students, teachers, Unix newbies, researchers, open source developers, Unix Sys admins, Unix/Linux community members, etc. to enhance their Unix skills.

Some of the public/remote Unix systems provide full shell access to a particular type of Unix variant and allows you to compile and test the code with the help of compiler tools and other utilities. Also you can view man pages, if required.

Pre-requisites :

  • Access to Internet

  • Use SSH or web-based SSH Java Client

Note: SSH - Like telnet, only more secure text-based interface encrypts all data between the public / remote Unix system and your computer, including your username and password. Unix users can use "ssh", but Windows users will have to download and install an SSH client. Try PuTTY (the Telnet and SSH client itself). It's free and simple.

If you require access to a particular type of Unix system, this is the place to look for.

Note: Read ALL the Terms & Conditions, On-screen Instructions while registering as some of them has placed constraints like time limit  (30-day evaluation period), Home Quota size limit, Maximum no. of background processes limit, etc...

The Super Dimension Fortress

SDF Public Access UNIX System - Free Shell Account and Shell Access, established in 1987.

The Super Dimension Fortress is a networked community of free software
authors, teachers, students, researchers, hobbyists, enthusiasts and
the blind. It is operated as a federally recognised non-profit 501(c)(7)
and is supported by its members.

Our mission is to provide remotely accessible computing facilities for
the advancement of public education, cultural enrichment, scientific
research and recreation. Members can interact electronically with each
other regardless of their location using passive or interactive forums.
Further purposes include the recreational exchange of information
concerning the Liberal and Fine Arts.

Members have UNIX shell access to games, email, usenet, chat, bboard,
webspace, gopherspace, programming utilities, archivers, browsers, and
more. The SDF community is made up of caring, highly skilled people who
operate behind the scenes to maintain a non-commercial INTERNET.

Arbornet, Inc.

America's oldest public access UNIX system. It is a FreeBSD 4.3 system, provides compiler access, web-conference, web space, etc...

FYI, I've an account in this server to compile and test the C/C++ code snippets using the GNU compiler tools.

The Forest - Free Linux Shells

* 10MB mail quota (inbox&spool - username@daforest.org)
* 3 background processes (1 bot max, 1 bnc max)
* A personal web page (includes php4, SSI/CGI if *really* needed)
* A directory in the anonymous FTP area
* WebMail access
* POP3 mail access (by request)

polarhome.com - gateway to freedom

polarhome.com is non commercial, educative effort for popularization of shell enabled operating systems and Internet services, offering shell accounts and other services on all available resources.

Corporate Programs

Note: Read ALL the Terms & Conditions, On-screen Instructions while registering as some of them has placed constraints like time limit  (30-day evaluation period), Home Quota size limit, Maximum no. of background processes limit, etc...

HP offers the Developer & Solution Partner Program , which offers, among other things, remote access to a variety of HP and Compaq servers. HP/Compaq's Test Drive Program offers free access for a 30-day period (at the time of this writing) to a variety of operating systems running on 64-bit Itanium, Alpha, and PA-RISC.

IBM runs two programs, PartnerWorld and Linux Community Development, that offer access to AIX and other IBM OSes, and Linux on the S/390, respectively. The Linux S/390 program is free; unfortunately IBM has placed some constraints, including set times at which you are able to register.
Watch out for more...
